More than a century ago, archaeologists made history with the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb—and now, mounting evidence points to the existence of hidden rooms and passageways near the ancient pharaoh’s final resting place that may have long concealed similar marvels below Egypt’s Valley of the Kings.
The tantalizing new findings have come to light thanks to a new geophysical investigation around the tomb, designated KV62, which revealed a series of underground anomalies that researchers believe could represent an unknown complex of concealed chambers, corridors, and possibly even hidden tombs.
The findings, while promising, are still inconclusive for now, and some independent experts say caution is warranted and that physical evidence will be required to confirm whether these unusual subsurface features may represent additional human-built structures from Egypt’s Dynastic Period.
If confirmed, the possible existence of hidden chambers could lead to discoveries that may include answers to one of Egyptology’s great mysteries: the location of Queen Nefertiti’s burial chamber.
New Discoveries Beneath the Valley of the Kings?
Using ground-penetrating radar and microgravity measurements, researchers were able to detect the unusual subsurface features, which may have been missed during previous surveys. These techniques can detect very subtle variations in Earth’s gravitational field that are caused by differences in the density of material within the Earth.
With more than 1,200 measurements across an area of around 35 square meters near Tutankhamun’s tomb, the microgravity survey revealed low-density anomalies, some of which appear to convey right-angled features roughly aligned with the northern wall of the tomb’s burial chamber.

Such characteristics, researchers believe, are consistent with the presence of additional structures.
Mamdouh Eldamaty, an archaeologist at Ain Shams University in Cairo and Egypt’s former antiquities minister, recently said the discoveries could point to the existence of a “hidden complex of corridors and rooms” adjacent to the famous tomb.
Intriguing Features
One very intriguing element of the recent detections is the presence of what appears to be an approximately two-meter-wide corridor, which it is believed may be filled with rubble. This area, which extends away from Tutankhamun’s burial chamber, may have been missed during earlier investigations, according to George Ballard, a geophysics specialist who examined the recent results, since in the past, researchers have primarily searched for large, empty chambers.
Past searches have also been focused mainly on the area directly behind the tomb wall, which further points to the idea that nearby evidence of hidden chambers simply might have been overlooked.
Another feature the recent survey uncovered, dubbed “anomaly 7,” comprises a low-density zone around a square-shaped region of higher-density material. Ballard has suggested this could point to a chamber filled with objects, although he concedes that the recent measurements were obtained under conditions approaching the limits of what ground-penetrating radar and microgravity surveys can accurately reveal.

A Controversial Hypothesis Resurfaces
Although the recent findings provide new data, they also help revive a controversial theory advanced by British Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves, who in 2015 argued that there were architectural features along KV62’s walls that could point to evidence of additional rooms.
Among these, the long-lost burial chamber of Queen Nefertiti could also be hidden. According to Reeves, KV62 may once have been part of a larger royal tomb complex, which at some time—likely coinciding with the untimely death of the young king Tutankhamun—may have been repurposed.
In the past, geophysical investigations have produced conflicting results, which further complicates ideas like those advanced by Reeves. However, some of those investigations did detect areas researchers say could represent voids—areas that might represent hidden tombs.
The new results have led to renewed interest in the possibility that additional chambers have remained hidden nearby Tutankhamun’s burial place, although presently there is still no evidence that they contain burials, let alone the final resting place of Nefertiti.
The Search for Nefertiti’s Tomb
The final resting place of Nefertiti, Tutankhamun’s half-sister and the wife of King Akhenaten, has long remained one of Egyptology’s greatest unsolved mysteries.
Last year, former Egyptian antiquities minister Zahi Hawass made the intriguing claim that discoveries were on the horizon that could help bring a resolution to this longstanding riddle. Hawas hinted at the discovery of a new passageway within the Great Pyramid at the time, and some experts suggested that such forthcoming revelations could be linked to the missing tombs of both Nefertiti and Imhotep.
Whether the latest discoveries, which were featured during a recent Nature Briefing Chat, are indeed related to such longstanding archaeological questions remains unclear, although they add to the intrigue surrounding past statements by Hawass and others regarding forthcoming discoveries that, once they are confirmed, could significantly advance our knowledge of Egypt’s Dynastic Period.
The Path Toward Solving the Mystery
Presently, researchers have proposed drilling several small exploratory holes toward one of the most significant anomalies, located north of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber. There, tiny remote-controlled vehicles fitted with 360-degree cameras can be inserted, allowing archaeologists to investigate any spaces that may exist within.
Before such work can commence, authorization must first be acquired from Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities. Once permission is obtained, the team says their investigations could begin as early as November 2026.
Until that time, the new findings remain only tantalizing possibilities. However, in the months ahead, new information could be unearthed that significantly advances our understanding of the Valley of the Kings and the world of the ancient Egyptians that still fascinates us today.
