Around 4,000 years ago, people living on a narrow ridge in what is now northwestern Morocco began modifying the landscape. They dug a ditch across the ridge, piled up an earthen embankment, and constructed a wall that may have protected the settlement beyond it.
New radiocarbon dating indicates the complex at Oued Beht is the earliest confirmed large-scale defensive construction in North Africa outside Egypt.
Published in Libyan Studies, the discovery fills a conspicuous gap in the region’s archaeological record. It offers rare evidence of what researchers believe may be an emerging Bronze Age society in the northwestern Maghreb.
“Regardless of its defensive or other functions, the confirmation of a major sequence of wall, embankment and ditch construction” represents a significant archaeological advance, researchers write. The structures are “securely dated to the early-to-mid-second millennium BC.”
The findings also reveal a striking transformation at Oued Beht.
Centuries earlier, the site’s inhabitants had occupied an extensive agricultural and manufacturing center on an open plateau. During the second millennium BC, activity shifted south to a smaller, naturally protected ridge between a river and a ravine.
That movement, from open productive land to restricted and defensible terrain, may provide one of the clearest clues yet that social conditions in prehistoric North Africa were changing.

AN ANCIENT FORTIFICATION HIDING A LONGER HISTORY
Oued Beht overlooks a perennial river in Morocco’s Khémisset Province. Archaeologists have known about walls and earthworks on the ridge since the 1930s, when French archaeologist Armand Ruhlmann interpreted the location as an éperon barré, or “barred spur”—a settlement protected by constructing a barrier across its only easily accessible side.
However, no one knew when the structures were originally built. Parts had clearly been repaired or rebuilt in historic times, making it difficult to determine whether anything prehistoric survived beneath the visible masonry.
During excavations conducted in 2023, the Oued Beht Archaeological Project cut a 46.5-foot-long trench across the feature known as Wall B1. Rather than a single structure, the team uncovered a complex sequence of walls, packed-earth embankments, ditches, burning layers, and later repairs.
Seventeen radiocarbon dates from the trench demonstrated that construction began during the early second millennium BC. Charcoal beneath the earliest wall produced date ranges of 2010–1747 BC and 1896–1623 BC. Seeds recovered from later embankment and ditch deposits date primarily to approximately 1530- 1300 BC.
The earliest wall may have incorporated timber or other organic materials covered with daub. Burned and unburned daub beneath later stonework, along with two separate burning horizons, suggests the barrier was constructed, damaged, and repaired repeatedly.
Researchers caution that the feature’s purpose is still unproven. Nevertheless, its position across the narrow ridge, combined with the ditch, rampart, and wall, is consistent with a defensive system designed to control access to the settlement’s southern end.
Building it would have required organized labor, planning, and the ability to mobilize a community. The fortification may therefore reflect growing competition over agricultural land, resources, or movement through the landscape rather than defense against a particular invading population.

FROM STONE AXES TO FORTIFIED RIDGES
The newly identified phase is especially important because it differs dramatically from Oued Beht’s better-known past.
Between roughly 3400 and 2900 BC, Final Neolithic activity covered approximately 25 to 27 acres of the northern ridge. Its inhabitants cultivated barley, wheat, and peas, raised animals, and gathered wild olive, pistachio, carob, and jujube. Numerous bell-shaped storage pits suggest they accumulated crops on a considerable scale.
Oued Beht was also a major manufacturing center. Archaeologists have recovered elaborate pottery and enormous numbers of polished stone axes and adzes. Three axes found within a single 269-square-foot excavation area would, if that small sample proved representative, equal approximately 1,200 tools per hectare.
The Bronze Age occupation was different. Instead of concentrating on the broad northern plateau, people selected the narrower southern ridge, where converging waterways and limestone scarps afforded natural protection.
The change does not prove warfare or political upheaval. However, the combination of a key location and labor-intensive construction that appears to form a fortification system suggests that controlling space had become increasingly important.
It may also place Oued Beht within transformations occurring across the western Mediterranean. At roughly the same time, communities belonging to the El Argar culture of southern Iberia were constructing fortifications on hilltops, developing metalworking, and establishing more visibly hierarchical societies.
Evidence from Morocco remains too limited to claim that the societies were equivalent. The dates of two copper-based objects found at Oued Beht are also uncertain. Still, discoveries at Oued Beht and the later Bronze Age settlement of Kach Kouch are beginning to show that the Maghreb was not a space between better-documented civilizations.
Researchers say archaeologists may finally be witnessing the “emergence into documented reality” of a northwestern Maghrebian Bronze Age that developed alongside and interacted with societies on the Strait of Gibraltar.
The ridge continued to attract people long afterward. Between the 11th and 13th centuries AD, inhabitants rebuilt parts of the ancient barrier, established a nearby rural settlement, and buried potentially hundreds of people in a cemetery covering at least 17,000 square feet.
Ultimately, this suggests Oued Beht was not one settlement frozen in time. It was a strategic landscape repeatedly rediscovered and reshaped for thousands of years.
“Together, these findings underscore Oued Beht’s centrality for revising long-term settlement and socio-economic patterns in northwestern Morocco,” the researchers write. “[They also] highlight the site’s broader significance for understanding cross-Mediterranean interactions during later prehistory and beyond.”
